According to artist Lucy Raven, the roots of Occupy Oakland run deep.

"Oakland has a progressive radical history," Raven told me as she and her partner, journalist Alex Abramovich, made their way back to the Bay Area after interviewing retired Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts about recent Occupy actions. "The seeds sown in 1968 are flowering now," Raven said.

When his latest graphic novel, Wilson, was named one of the top fiction books of 2010 by Time magazine, it may have seemed like a seminal moment for Daniel Clowes. But that was actually just the latest in a long line of impressive achievements for the Oakland-based writer and illustrator: an Academy Award® screenwriting nomination, multiple comic-industry honors, and a serial in The New York Times Magazine, to name just a few.

On May 1, OMCA's newly transformed Gallery of California History received the American Association of Museum's 24th Annual Excellence in Exhibition Award. The award goes to exhibits that successfully integrate scholarship, audience engagement, exhibit design and programming and offer visitors a chance to explore new ideas, as well as directly communicate an institution's value to the public. We here at OMCA are very honored that the exhibit received such recognition from our museum colleagues!

Oakland pitcher's spectacular outing makes history

From the beginning of the game, it was as if the Minnesota Twins never had a chance.

It was only the first inning and 22-year-old Oakland Athletics pitcher James Augustus Hunter, known by the nickname "Catfish," had already sent two scoreless Twins' trudging back into the dugout.

Up next was Harmon "Killer" Killebrew, one of the team's most feared hitters. He too never made it to first base.

Vietnam vets take guests, other vets up in the air

If you've visited The 1968 Exhibit, chances are you've seen the Huey helicopter, which looks as if it has landed right in the middle of a '60s-era living room.

Greeting visitors at the show's entrance, the aircraft is part of a stunning tableau that includes film and audio and serves as a visual metaphor of the impact of the Vietnam War on American life.
