In this photograph taken on August 5, 1970, Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, addresses a roaring crowd of 10,000 supporters in front of the Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland, following his release after three years in prison. Newton had been arrested in 1967 after a confrontation with the Oakland Police left Officer John Frey dead, Officer Herbert Heanes shot, and Newton himself wounded in the stomach.
